Key Features of Free AI Image Upscaler to Convert Photos to 4K Resolution

4× AI Image Upscaling

Upscale supported images by 4×, with output up to 4096px on the long edge. AI processing can improve the appearance of some compression artifacts, noise, and soft edges, but cannot recreate detail missing from the original.

Local Processing, No Account

The model runs in your browser with WebGPU when available, or WebAssembly as a fallback. Your selected image is processed on your device and is not sent to our server.

Process Multiple Images

Add multiple JPG, PNG, or WebP images and process them one at a time in your browser. There are no accounts or credits to manage; performance depends on your device and browser.

Guides & Tips

How to Upscale an Image 4× Locally in Your Browser

This tool enlarges supported images by 4× with an AI upscaling model that runs locally in your browser. For example, a 512×512px image can become 2048×2048px after processing. Output is limited to 4096px on the long edge, so the final size depends on both the original image dimensions and the output limit.

Your selected image is processed on your device. It is not sent to the BulkPicTools server, and you do not need to create an account to use the tool. When available, the tool uses WebGPU for faster processing. Browsers without WebGPU support use WebAssembly instead, which may take longer on large images.

  1. Choose an image
Drop an image into the tool, choose one from your device, or paste from the clipboard. Supported input formats are JPG, PNG, and WebP. Images can be up to 10 MB. Larger images are automatically downsampled before processing, and output is normalized to 4096px on the long edge (4K).
  2. Upscale the image 4×
The AI model processes the image locally and creates a 4× larger result. If you add multiple images, they are processed one at a time in your browser. Processing speed depends on the image size, your browser, and your device.
  3. Compare and download
Use the before-and-after comparison to review the result. Download the upscaled image as PNG or WebP. If the result is larger than you need for the web, use the Image Compressor afterward to reduce file size.

If your original file is not supported, convert it first with the Image Converter. If you need a specific final width or height after upscaling, use the Image Resizer.

When AI Upscaling Helps — and When It Does Not

AI upscaling is useful when an image is too small for its intended display size. Unlike ordinary resizing, which only enlarges existing pixels, an AI model predicts higher-resolution detail from the original image. This can make some edges, textures, and compression artifacts look cleaner, but it does not recover the exact information that was missing from the source file.

Image situationWhat to expectRecommended next step
A small image with a reasonably clear subjectA 4× result can be more useful for larger displays, cropping, or higher-resolution layoutsUse AI Image Upscaler
JPG with mild compression artifacts or soft edgesAI processing may reduce the visible appearance of blockiness, noise, or edge softnessUpscale and compare the result with the original
An image that already has enough dimensions but looks pixelatedIncreasing dimensions may not be necessaryTry Unpixelate Image instead
A severely blurred, out-of-focus, or extremely tiny imageThe result may look larger, but AI cannot restore real detail that was never capturedUse the highest-quality original available
A screenshot with very small textText may become larger, but unclear characters are not guaranteed to become accurate or readableLook for the original screenshot or source document where possible
An image that must be an exact size, such as 1920×10804× upscaling changes dimensions proportionally rather than targeting a fixed canvas sizeUpscale first, then use Image Resizer

For the best outcome, start with the clearest source image available. AI upscaling can improve the appearance of some low-resolution or compressed images, but it should be treated as an enhancement step rather than a replacement for a high-quality original.

Choose the Right Image Enhancement Workflow

The best workflow depends on what you need to improve. This tool is designed for quick local 4× upscaling in a browser, with no account and no server-side image upload. It is a practical option for images you prefer to keep on your device and for tasks where installing desktop software is unnecessary.

WorkflowBest forWhat to consider
Local browser-based upscalingQuick 4× enlargement, private images, and occasional multi-image processingSpeed and maximum image size depend on your device and browser
Cloud-based AI serviceAdvanced restoration, larger models, or cross-device workflowsImages are sent to the service provider; accounts, quotas, or paid plans may apply
Desktop upscaling softwareFrequent offline work, larger files, and professional batch workflowsRequires installation and may need more storage, memory, or GPU resources

Use this AI Image Upscaler when you need a larger image and want the processing to stay in your browser. Use Unpixelate Image when the current dimensions are already correct and you only want to reduce visible pixel blocks or compression artifacts. After upscaling, you can use the Image Compressor to reduce output file size, or the Image Converter to change formats.

4× Upscaling, 4K, and Output Size

“4× upscaling” and “4K” work together in this tool: the AI model enlarges the image 4×, and the result is then normalized to 4096px on the long edge (4K) while keeping the original aspect ratio. In other words, every output is brought to 4K — a 960×540px photo becomes 4096×2304px, and a portrait or square photo is scaled to the same 4096px long edge.

Original imageOutput (4K long edge)Notes

512×512px4096×4096pxSquare output reaches 4K on both edges
Under ~480px long edgekept at 4× sizeVery small sources are not stretched to 4K

Larger inputs are automatically downsampled before the AI model runs, so there is no input size limit to worry about. A few square images near 4096px may be reduced very slightly to stay within browser canvas limits. If you need a specific final canvas size afterward, use the Image Resizer. If the upscaled photo still looks soft rather than just small, resolution wasn't the only problem — the AI Image to HD enhancer rebuilds detail instead of only adding pixels.

How to use

1

Choose an Image

Drop an image here, browse your device, or paste from the clipboard. Your image is processed locally in the browser. Supports JPG, PNG, and WebP up to 10 MB. Larger images are automatically downsampled before processing, and output is normalized to 4096px on the long edge (4K).

2

Upscale 4× Locally

The tool enlarges the image 4× with the SPAN model. WebGPU is used when your browser supports it; WebAssembly is used as a fallback. For multiple files, images are processed in sequence.

3

Compare and Download

Review the before-and-after comparison, then download a PNG or WebP result. If you need a smaller file afterward, use the Image Compressor.
